The design draws inspiration from the great traditions of 18th and early 19th-century English cabinetmaking, with Church’s work specifically influenced by makers including Chippendale, Hepplewhite and Sheraton. This exact model appears in Theodore Alexander’s original English Cabinet Maker catalogue and remains documented by the manufacturer today. Beautifully constructed with richly figured flame veneer and satinwood crossbanding, the chest has a particularly elegant bow front with distinctive concave corners and architectural uprights. Beneath the top is a discreet pull-out veneered serving slide, followed by four graduated bow-front drawers fitted with finely cast natural brass handles. The lower corners incorporate attractive fan-pattern detailing before terminating in elegant splayed feet. The quality of the veneers is especially impressive, having been carefully matched across the top, drawer fronts and uprights to create the wonderfully symmetrical figuring visible throughout. Theodore Alexander specifies the materials as Okoume veneer, satinwood veneer and brass, finished in its Classic Charleston finish. This example retains its original Theodore Alexander brass maker's plaque together with its Brights of Nettlebed stock label, number 306362, confirming it was retailed through the renowned English luxury furniture retailer. Brights describes the English Cabinet Maker range as being based upon Stephen Church's classically inspired designs and traditionally executed cabinetmaking. This is a particularly useful size and would work equally well as a substantial bedside chest, side chest or elegant occasional chest in a drawing room, study or bedroom.
