A superb quality English Regency period mahogany twin pedestal dining table, circa 1820, of particularly elegant proportions and displaying the refined cabinetmaking associated with the period. The beautifully figured mahogany top has softly rounded ends and is framed by a broad contrasting satinwood crossbanded border with fine line inlay, giving the table considerably more decorative presence than the plainer mahogany examples more commonly encountered. Comparable genuine Regency twin-pedestal tables of circa 1820–25 employ the same combination of turned pedestal columns, sweeping splayed legs and brass castors, while period examples with satinwood banding are also documented. The table is raised upon a pair of beautifully constructed four-splay pedestal bases, each centred by a substantial turned mahogany column and supported on gracefully swept legs decorated with contrasting inlaid lines, terminating in brass caps and original-style brass castors. The top extends by means of additional leaves, allowing the table to be reduced or enlarged according to requirements. Of particular interest is the surviving old Phillips auction label to the underside, a wonderful piece of its history and provenance. The quality of the timber, restrained Regency detailing, underside construction and substantial pedestal framework all support an early 19th-century date of circa 1820; comparable period twin-pedestal dining tables are likewise catalogued with these characteristic features The table is offered in lovely antique condition. We have deep cleaned, hand condition-waxed and hand polished the entire piece from top to bottom, carefully preserving the wonderful colour, character and period patina that have developed over approximately two centuries. There will naturally be age and use-related patina marks, minor surface marks and signs of historic movement consistent with honest use and transport, all of which form part of the character of a genuine period piece rather than detracting from it. Please also note the the extension leaves with have slight height variations to the main table and small gaps running along the join lines, this happens with all tables from this period as 200+ year old wood changes in shape over time
