Displaying the graceful curves associated with the Louis XV tradition. The beautifully figured walnut frame features sweeping open arms terminating in carved scrolls, a shaped and finely carved apron and elegant cabriole legs. The chair retains its traditional coil-sprung seat base, giving it the substantial construction and comfortable proportions expected of good-quality period seating. The armchair is upholstered in a luxurious pale champagne-coloured silk blend damask, woven with an elegant repeating design of floral bouquets, ribbons and trailing foliage. The tone-on-tone pattern has a wonderfully soft, lustrous finish which changes subtly with the light, complementing the warm colour and natural figuring of the walnut beautifully. The combination gives the chair a wonderfully refined French château or country-house appearance. The chair is presented in good antique condition with the expected signs of age and use. The walnut frame displays minor marks and natural variations consistent with its age, while the silk damask has developed an attractive patina around the edges together with areas of tonal and colour variation, particularly to the sides. These have been mentioned for accuracy and, in our opinion, form part of the authentic character and charm of this elegant antique armchair.
