The design is closely associated with the Globe-Wernicke type of stacking bookcase, originally developed during the late Victorian period and becoming enormously popular from the 1890s into the Edwardian era. Their great innovation was that individually glazed sections could be stacked together, protecting books from dust while allowing a library to be enlarged or reduced as required. This example comprises four individual glazed bookcase sections, each fitted with a glazed up-and-over retractable door which lifts and slides back into the cabinet. The sections simply stack upon one another between the moulded cornice and plinth, meaning the bookcase can be made shorter by removing sections, or rearranged to suit its new interior. The warm honey oak has particularly attractive grain and is complemented beautifully by the gilt-brass straps, corner fittings and small brass door knobs, giving the whole piece that classic late Victorian/Edwardian library appearance. The bookcase is offered in good vintage condition with the expected minor marks, knocks and variations in colour from age and use, all contributing to its attractive character. A particularly practical piece of library furniture, combining the appearance of an 1890–1910 sectional bookcase with the versatility of a genuinely modular design — equally suitable for books, collectables or decorative display.
