a superb and highly decorative late victorian carved mahogany window seat, circa 1890, recently fully restored to an exceptionally high standard. The substantial mahogany frame is beautifully carved throughout with scrolling acanthus leaves and flower-head ornament, the opposing raised ends formed as open galleries with carved central floral panels and boldly scrolling upper rails. Particularly attractive are the four sweeping cabriole legs, each terminating in wonderfully sculptural hairy paw feet, giving the piece tremendous character and presence. The window seat has undergone a comprehensive professional restoration, including the careful replacement of damaged and missing carved elements before the entire mahogany frame was traditionally french polished, bringing out the wonderfully warm colour and grain of the timber whilst retaining its period character. A completely new chesterfield-style deep-buttoned brown leather seat pad has been traditionally made specifically for the piece. The new hide has been hand dyed six times, antiqued, sealed, waxed and polished, producing the wonderful variation of cognac, chestnut and darker brown tones normally associated with generations of natural wear, whilst retaining the strength and practicality of newly upholstered leather. The result is an exceptionally handsome single-person window seat combining the elaborate carving and sculptural character of late victorian furniture with the luxurious appearance of a traditional brown leather chesterfield. Its compact proportions make it particularly versatile as a window seat, dressing stool, bedroom stool, fireside seat or occasional chair, while the newly upholstered deep-buttoned leather provides considerably more comfort than many surviving period examples. A wonderfully characterful piece of english furniture, sympathetically restored and ready for another generation of use.
