A powerful Baroque oil on canvas depicting Christ with the Crown of Thorns, painted in Germany around 1750. Rich in devotional symbolism and executed with remarkable artistic sensitivity, this impressive work embodies the emotional intensity and spiritual depth that characterize German Baroque religious painting.

Christ is portrayed wearing the Crown of Thorns, one of the most poignant symbols of the Passion. His serene yet sorrowful expression conveys both suffering and redemption, inviting contemplation of the sacrifice at the heart of the Christian faith. Particularly noteworthy is the German inscription "Wie eine Lilie unter den Dornen" ("Like a lily among the thorns"), a biblical quotation from the Song of Songs (2:2). Within Christian tradition, the lily symbolizes purity and divine grace, while the thorns represent suffering and the fallen world, lending the painting a profound theological message.

Executed in oil on canvas, the composition displays refined brushwork, a harmonious palette, and expressive modelling of the figure. The canvas has been professionally lined (relined), ensuring its structural stability while preserving the character and integrity of the original work.

An outstanding example of mid-18th-century German sacred art, this painting possesses both significant devotional importance and timeless decorative appeal.
