A hand-carved Nipopo with a warm, expressive wood grain.
Dimensions: height 32 cm, diameter approximately 11 cm.
Made by inmates of Abashiri Prison on Hokkaido. The underside bears the provenance stamp 網走刑務所, meaning ‘Abashiri Prison’.
Nipopo means ‘little wooden child’ in the Ainu language; these figures are traditionally associated with good fortune.
The faceted body and stylised face beautifully reveal the natural grain of the solid wood. A distinctive accent with a story, its warm wood tones bringing calm and depth to an interior.
In excellent condition, with a beautifully preserved wooden surface. This piece has an attribution mark,
I am sure that it is completely authentic and take full responsibility for any authenticity
