This striking piece exemplifies the height of the Chinese Art Deco movement, characterized by bold fields and minimalist, naturalistic motifs. The luxurious, deep pile wool captures light beautifully, distinguishing it among other antique rugs of the period.

The expansive field is rendered in a rich, velvety hue, officially described as red, though its saturation gives it a deep red cast in certain lights. This vivid color choice is framed by a broad, solid black border featuring elegantly rounded corners, a signature element of 1920s design aesthetics.

The composition is deliberately asymmetrical, utilizing negative space to great effect. A cascade of blossoming branches, featuring subtle tones of blue, gold, and purple, anchors the lower left quadrant. Counterbalancing this is a delicate depiction of bamboo and a stylized bird, likely a pheasant or phoenix, positioned in the upper right.

The scale of this piece ensures it commands attention, making it an ideal anchor for a sophisticated interior setting. The interplay between the dramatic field color and the sparse, elegant detailing creates a timeless statement of early 20th-century luxury. Its substantial dimensions make it suitable for use as a room size rug. See less
