There is something rather wonderful about an English dining table designed to grow with the occasion. A table for everyday family meals that, with the turn of a crank and the addition of a leaf or two, could be made ready for Sunday lunch, Christmas gatherings, or an evening when a few more chairs were needed.
This 19th century English oak extending dining table is a beautiful example of that tradition, combining thoughtful engineering with the warmth and craftsmanship of English furniture making.
The oak has developed a gorgeous, rich color, with the depth and variation that comes from generations of use and care. The construction is equally appealing, reflecting the skill of the cabinetmaker and an era when even the practical workings of a piece of furniture were made with considerable attention to detail.
Perhaps our favorite feature is the crank-operated extension mechanism. A wonderful piece of Victorian ingenuity, it allows the table to extend to accommodate two additional leaves, transforming it from a comfortable everyday dining table into one ready to welcome a larger gathering. There is something immensely satisfying about the mechanics of it all—a reminder of a time when craftsmanship and clever engineering went hand in hand.
Completing the table are exquisite metal casters, a lovely period detail that is as practical as it is decorative.
Without its leaves, the table measures 58.5 inches wide. The two leaves, measuring 16.5 inches and 17.5 inches, allow it to extend to an impressive 92.5 inches, offering wonderful flexibility for both everyday living and entertaining.
One can easily imagine this table at the heart of an English home, its length changing with the seasons and the number of people gathered around it. It is precisely this combination of beauty, ingenuity, and usefulness that makes antique English dining tables so appealing to us.
Hand selected in and imported from England, this 19th century oak extending dining table is ready to continue its story—one meal, one gathering, and one generation at a time.
The apron height is 23.5". There is a 5" overhang of the tabletop beyond the apron. The knee clearance of the overhang is 27.5".
