Pair of Italian Neoclassical Painted and Parcel-Gilt Console Tables, 19th Century — Faux Top, Carved Giltwood Swags and Rosettes, Tapered Fluted Legs
This elegant pair of Italian Neoclassical console tables embodies the refined restraint of late 18th- and 19th-century Italian decorative arts, marrying architectural gravitas with delicate carved ornament. Each table is finished in a soft cream painted ground, accented throughout with parcel-gilt highlights that catch the light along the molded edges and carved reliefs.
The frieze of each table is centered by a finely carved giltwood swag of stylized acanthus leaves and a rosette blossom, flanked on either side by matching gilt rosette paterae at the corners — a hallmark of the Neoclassical vocabulary drawn from antique Roman ornament and popularized throughout Italy following the excavations at Herculaneum and Pompeii. The case rests upon tapered, gently fluted square legs, each terminating at the frieze in a turned gilt block capital, lending the silhouette a poised, architectural verticality typical of the Louis XVI-influenced Italian style.
The tops present a rich faux painted finish in warm tortoise and umber tones, simulating variegated marble and adding textural depth against the pale cream body. This aged, painted surface has developed a lovely patina of soft craquelure and wear consistent with age and honest use.
Sold as a true pair, these consoles are exceptionally versatile — flanking a doorway, positioned symmetrically in an entrance hall or gallery, or paired beneath mirrors in a formal dining room or salon. Their Neoclassical vocabulary makes them a natural fit for interiors ranging from Gustavian and Italian villa aesthetics to more eclectic European antique collections.
