Antique 1930s Art Deco Earthenware Powder Box with Female Bust Handle - Made in Japan
Period: 1930s
Styles: Art Deco
Place of Origin: Japan
Materials: Earthenware, Ceramic, Crackle Glaze
Dimensions: 5.125 in. W x 5.125 in. D x 4.5 in. H
An authentic, rare 1930s Art Deco period Japanese earthenware vanity powder box featuring an elegant, sculptural handle shaped as a stylized female bust. This piece beautifully exemplifies the sleek, geometric minimalism of pre-war European modernism interpreted by Japanese artisans for the Western export market, showcasing a serene woman with her eyes closed and head dramatically upturned.
The entire piece is finished in an off-white/warm gray crackle glaze (craquelure), accented with subtle mineral pinpricks that lend a rustic, weathered antique character to the smooth form. The underside of the lid features a central firing vent hole typical of hollow-cast vintage ceramics, while the bottom of the base is stamped with an authentic stamped "MADE IN JAPAN" mark surrounding a crosshatch/well-frame maker's logo.
Perfect for displaying on a bedroom vanity, dresser, or bathroom shelf to hold cosmetic powders, jewelry, or small trinkets.
Condition: Good Condition, Original Condition Unaltered, Some Imperfections
Condition Notes: Beautiful vintage condition with an overall aged crackle glaze patina. Features one small chip/glaze flake on the front lower rim edge of the lid and a tiny surface flea bite graze on the right edge, consistent with age and regular handling. Small iron mineral specks are present beneath the glaze from production. No structural cracks or repairs to the ceramic body. The piece displays an authentic vintage patina, including typical shelf wear and minor darkening along the raw, unglazed foot ring and rim edges from decades of handling. This natural discoloration is purely cosmetic and emphasizes its authentic mid-century age."
