A charming weathered Japanese two-panel Edo period folding gilt byobu screen depicting four birds amid flowering chrysanthemums beside a bamboo fence. Measuring over 6 feet wide the distinctive painting features a radiant gold leaf square ground having a desirable weathered patina. Sparrows and a red-headed bird, possibly a Japanese robin, animate the composition, bringing a playful sense of movement to the garden scene.
Executed in ink and natural color pigments on paper over squares of patinated gold leaf, the painting balances delicate floral forms with the simple geometry of the bamboo fence. The luminous gold ground provides a warm backdrop for the flowers and delicate birds, lending richness to the screen’s elongated, horizontal composition.
The unsigned painting is attributed to the Kano school and is believed to date to the 18th century, within Japan’s Edo period (1615–1868). Its garden imagery and intimate scale offer a graceful expression of Japanese bird-and-flower painting.
Measuring 73 inches wide and 29 inches high, the screen has a low, expansive profile that allows the composition to unfold across its two panels. The authentic patinated surface and surviving gold leaf give the work a timeworn character, with visible evidence of its age and history.
