Rare & Original Helena Wolfsohn Miniature Cup and Saucer for your consideration. The cup measures approx. 1 1/4 inches tall and approx. 2 1/4 inches from rim to handle. Saucer measures approx. 2 3/4 inches in diameter and approx. 5/8 of an inch tall. German, Dresden, 19th Century. An exquisite, highly collectible porcelain miniature cabinet cup and saucer set. This diminutive set was decorated by the renowned studio of Helena Wolfsohn (operating from 1843 until 1945) and beautifully emulates the classic Rococo Meissen style. The cup and saucer feature alternating hand-painted panels (cartouches): one side depicts a romantic "Watteau-style" courting couple sharing a quiet moment in a lush garden landscape, while the alternating panels showcase vibrant, finely detailed floral bouquets. The scenes are set against a rich cobalt blue ground, entirely framed by elaborate, raised geometric gilt details and delicate scrollwork. The base of both the cup and the saucer features the famous blue underglaze "AR" (Augustus Rex) script monogram cipher. This specific mark allows us to date the piece precisely between 1879 and 1883, right before a landmark trademark lawsuit forced the Wolfsohn studio to cease using the royal Meissen monogram. True miniature porcelain pieces of this caliber required masterful precision from the artisan and are highly prized for display in glass Victorian cabinet cases.
In very good antique condition. The porcelain has no chips, cracks, structural repairs, or hairlines. The hand-painted panel artwork remains remarkably vibrant, and the extensive gold gilding shows only minimal, age-appropriate wear. An exceptional example for a discerning Dresden or miniature porcelain collector.
