The gracefully bowed front flows into rounded, fluted corners that flare back toward the wall, so that when viewed from above, the casework traces the gentle silhouette of a lyre. The marble has been hand contoured and hand beveled to follow every curve of the case below, a mark of the careful finish found in the finest Parisian work.
Three drawers are framed in fine beaded brass molding, the upper frieze drawer fitted with a delicate escutcheon and the two lower drawers with round brass pulls. Bronze foliate rosettes accent the upper corners, and the commode rests on tapered, turned legs finished in bronze feet. The walnut has mellowed into a warm, glowing patina, with its figured grain beautifully displayed across the drawer fronts.
Created during the Belle Époque, when Parisian cabinetmakers celebrated the refined legacy of French furniture making by reviving and reinterpreting its great styles, the Louis XVI style was especially cherished for its neoclassical clarity, refinement of line and delicacy of ornament. Fluted corners, beaded moldings and elegantly tapered legs capture that spirit with quiet sophistication.
Placed in an entry beneath a gilded mirror, the commode creates an instant focal point. It is equally at home in a dining room as a serving piece, or in a bedroom or living room, where the marble top offers a beautiful setting for lamps, books and treasured objects. Warm walnut and soft marble tones complement both classic and transitional interiors.
