This exceptional example of early 20th-century Peking weaving features a densely populated, scattered design set against a rich, saturated field. The deep indigo hue provides a dramatic backdrop for the delicate motifs, making it a striking blue color rug in a versatile square format that anchors any sophisticated interior.

Characteristic of the period, the field employs an allover arrangement of auspicious Chinese symbols, including potted flowering plants, butterflies, and scattered sprigs of chrysanthemum and peony. This relaxed, naturalistic composition contrasts beautifully with the formal structure often found in earlier antique rugs, showcasing the evolution of Chinese textile artistry during the Republican Era.

The sophisticated palette utilizes soft gold, cream, and pale azure accents, which lift the design from the dark ground. The main border is particularly intricate, featuring alternating cartouches depicting stylized landscapes—complete with pagodas and weeping willows—interspersed with repeating floral medallions, framing the central tableau with architectural grace.

Woven during a period when Chinese workshops were producing some of their most technically refined pieces for Western export, this Peking rug offers superb quality and enduring visual appeal. Its generous dimensions ensure it functions perfectly as a room size rug, with its square shape capable of defining a primary living space or formal dining area with historical elegance. See less
