This exceptional piece of textile history represents the height of early 20th-century Chinese weaving, offering collectors a superb example of antique rugs crafted during the Republic period. The dense wool pile ensures both durability and a luxurious underfoot feel.

The commanding field is rendered in a deep, saturated indigo, providing a dramatic backdrop for the scattered motifs. This masterful use of the blue color creates a sense of depth and tranquility, characteristic of the finest Peking carpets from this era. Secondary hues of soft ivory, terracotta red, and pale sage highlight the intricate borders.

A powerful central medallion, featuring a stylized dragon amidst clouds and blossoms, anchors the composition. Surrounding this focal point, the geometric Greek key border and subtle internal guard bands frame the design beautifully. Its generous proportions classify it as a true room size piece, ideal for defining a sophisticated living space or formal dining area.

The overall aesthetic balances traditional Chinese symbolism with the slightly modernized palette favored in the 1920s. The field is scattered with delicate sprigs and sprays, demonstrating the enduring appeal of floral rugs in Chinese design. This hand-knotted wool carpet remains in excellent condition, preserving the clarity and luster of its original craftsmanship. See less
