The gilded surface has a warm, aged glow, and the arched top gives the whole piece a graceful, upright presence. The Louis Philippe style belongs to the July Monarchy of 1830 to 1848, a period of comfortable bourgeois prosperity when French furniture settled into heavier, simpler forms and rich, dark woods. Its surface carries the gentle marks of age, never overworked or artificially distressed. It catches the light in an entry, over a mantel or above a console, adding depth and a sense of history.
