The draped garlands and tapered legs are quintessentially neoclassical, and the gilding has a soft, aged glow. The Louis XVI style, named for the king who reigned from 1774 to 1792, turned away from Rococo curves toward straight, tapered lines and a renewed admiration for classical antiquity. French cabinetmakers returned to its restrained elegance again and again in the 19th century. Signs of age are consistent with its years and part of its quiet appeal. Its scale and proportions make it easy to place, and its character makes it hard to overlook. See less
