Gilt-brass mounts and pilasters accent the façade, and the swirling veneer glows warmly against the stone. The Empire style emerged under Napoleon at the start of the 19th century, drawing on Roman and Egyptian motifs and favoring mahogany, marble and gilt-bronze mounts to project strength and order. It remained popular in France long after the Empire itself had fallen. Age-appropriate wear and a soft patina speak to a long and honest working life. A piece of this kind earns its place through use, offering storage and presence in equal measure. See less
