The plain, dark case and the paneled doors give it an understated, classical dignity. Neoclassicism rose in the later 18th century after the excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum, favoring columns, urns, straight lines and the proportions of antiquity, a taste that lasted well into the 19th century. A natural patina has developed over the decades, adding depth that cannot be reproduced. A piece of this kind earns its place through use, offering storage and presence in equal measure. See less
