The patterned veneer and the stone top give the slender case a refined, jewel-like quality. The Louis XVI style, named for the king who reigned from 1774 to 1792, turned away from Rococo curves toward straight, tapered lines and a renewed admiration for classical antiquity. French cabinetmakers returned to its restrained elegance again and again in the 19th century. A natural patina has developed over the decades, adding depth that cannot be reproduced. Against a plain wall it becomes the quiet focal point of the room. See less
