The carved figures that crown the lid give the vessel a strong, totemic presence. Carved wooden vessels with figures supporting the lid belong to a long tradition of African woodcarving. Its surface carries the gentle marks of age, never overworked or artificially distressed. Set on a console, mantel or shelf, it brings history and material honesty to a considered interior. See less
