Acrylic on canvas by E.Vial. Signed on back and dated 1991.
It resembles an antique Karabakh or Caucasian rug and features geometric, tribal motifs on a dark bown/burgundy background.
The pattern depicted in the artwork belongs to both categories because Karabakh rugs are a specific regional subset of Caucasian rugs.
Specifically, this pattern represents a highly recognizable antique South Caucasian Karabakh design. The composition relies on classic regional hallmarks:
• The Central Band: A vertical chain of large, multi-pointed geometric star-burst medallions (often referred to as Chelaberd or Eagle Kazak medallions, which are historically woven in the Karabakh district).
• The Vertical Borders: Dense, multi-layered vertical side panels adorned with geometric hooks, boteh (paisley outlines), and stepped diagonal stripes.
• The Palette: Saturated reds, chocolate browns, deep indigos, and warm sand/ivory tones typical of Southern Caucasus weaving workshops.
