A beautifully preserved ado ‘kistje gekleurde tegels’, model 255, designed by ko verzuu and manufactured by ado in the netherlands in 1955. This construction and puzzle set consists of a cream-painted wooden box filled with brightly colored geometric plywood tiles, conceived to encourage children to create their own patterns, compositions and abstract forms. The set contains tiles in different geometric shapes and sizes, including squares, rectangles and triangles, painted in verzuu’s characteristic palette of red, blue, yellow, green, orange and cream. The original ado catalogue describes the set as containing colored tiles in various sizes and forms, intended for making figures and patterns. Rather than prescribing a single result, the simplicity of the elements leaves the composition entirely to the imagination of the child. This freedom of construction is central to ko verzuu’s approach to toy design. Ado was founded in 1925 as part of the berg en bosch sanatorium in apeldoorn, where recovering tuberculosis patients produced wooden objects as occupational therapy. Under verzuu, ado developed into one of the most distinctive producers of modernist wooden toys in the netherlands. Verzuu was strongly influenced by the dutch avant-garde and particularly by the work of gerrit rietveld and de stijl. Their emphasis on elementary geometry, clear construction and primary color became fundamental to ado’s visual language. Model 255 demonstrates this influence especially well: reduced to simple geometric pieces and strong areas of color, the set allows an almost unlimited number of compositions to emerge from a remarkably small vocabulary of forms. The cream-painted box itself forms an integral part of the design and retains its original round metal ado manufacturer’s tag to the front. The set remains in very good original condition, with attractive age-related wear and patina to both the box and colored wooden pieces. A particularly charming example of verzuu’s ability to unite play, education and the principles of dutch modernism in a deceptively simple object. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
