An exceptional piece of British ceramic history for the serious Royal Doulton collector or literary enthusiast.
This magnificent, limited-edition Royal Doulton Loving Cup was released in 1936 to commemorate Alexandre Dumas' classic 1844 adventure novel, The Three Musketeers. Co-designed by the legendary art directors Charles Noke and Harry Fenton, this massive two-handled jug was strictly limited to a worldwide production of only 600 pieces. This specific vessel is hand-numbered as No. 340.
Design Details:
The exterior features vibrant, hand-painted, high-relief molding. One side features a striking depiction of Cardinal Richelieu in his deep crimson robes holding a book, set against an old French street scene with courtly onlookers. The reverse side features the iconic musketeers themselves—Athos, Porthos, and Aramis—in deep relief modeling. Every structural detail, from the wide plumed hats to their distinct cross-laden tunics and buckled boots, stands out in high contrast. The twin handles are beautifully styled to resemble carved stone or timber architectural columns.
The base features a highly detailed backstamp showcasing an illustration of d'Artagnan, a graphic of the novel, the official Royal Doulton lion-and-crown crest, and the handwritten edition number 340.
Dimensions:
* 10 inches height, 10 inches width from handle-to-handle, and 8 inches depth
Given the extreme rarity and premium historic value of this low-run presentation piece, it will be wrapped in multiple protective layers of heavy-duty bubble cushioning and double-boxed to guarantee perfect transit safety.
