This exceptional example of early 20th-century Chinese weaving represents the pinnacle of the Peking style, highly sought after among collectors of antique rugs.

The composition is dominated by a saturated, deep blue field, providing a dramatic backdrop for the mythological dragon motifs rendered in rich saffron and pale gold. This intense use of color is characteristic of the finest wool Peking carpets produced during this period, moving away from the softer pastels of earlier designs.

A magnificent display of imperial symbolism, the design features five powerful dragons: four positioned dynamically in the corners and a pair intertwined within the circular central medallion. Presented in a generous room size format, this piece was clearly intended to anchor a grand interior space, showcasing both artistry and status.

Expertly hand-knotted in fine wool, the rug exhibits the soft, lustrous pile typical of Chinese craftsmanship from the Republican Era. Its sophisticated palette and powerful iconography ensure it remains a timeless statement piece, perfectly complementing both traditional and contemporary design schemes. See less
