A striking piece of French cognac history, this large-format Bisquit Dubouché bottle pairs green glass and richly detailed paper labels with a sculptural chrome tilting cradle and branded metal pourer. Standing approximately 24½ inches high, the ensemble brings architectural presence and authentic commercial character to a thoughtfully collected bar.
The cradle’s curved metal supports, broad base, exposed pivot hardware, and contrasting black Bisquit nameplate give it a distinctive modernist profile. Designed to support and tip the oversized bottle for pouring, the framework balances practical engineering with the visual appeal of a period advertising display. Its silver-toned finish creates a handsome contrast with the green glass and warm tones of the surviving labels.
The Cognac House & Historical Details
The Bisquit house traces its origins to Jarnac, France, in 1819. This example preserves several layers of its commercial identity: the Bisquit Dubouché & Co. name, a three-star designation, “Product of France,” and the name Édouard Laporte Bisquit as proprietor.
The label identifies the bottle’s original capacity as one gallon and its original contents as 84 proof. It also names G. H. Mumm Champagne and Associates, Inc., at 610 Fifth Avenue in New York, as the American importer—a particularly appealing detail connecting the French cognac house with its United States market.
Raised lettering near the lower portion of the bottle reads “Bisquit Dubouché & Co.” and “Jarnac–Cognac–France.” The shoulder label adds a decorative heraldic emblem, while the rear label preserves further references to the Laporte Bisquit business. Together, these details give the bottle interest from multiple viewing angles.
Construction & Surviving Branded Components
The substantial glass bottle rests within a fitted metal cradle incorporating side pivots, adjustment hardware, and a fabric-lined retaining collar. The collar carries the Bisquit name in script, and the curved metal pouring attachment is marked “Bisquit” and “France.”
An especially compelling detail appears on the base, which bears the inscription:
“NOT SOLD BUT REMAIN
PROPERTY OF BISQUIT DUBOUCHÉ & Co.”
Alongside the “Made in France” marking, this inscription supports its identification as branded commercial equipment retained by the cognac house for trade use. The bottle, cradle, and marked pourer together create a cohesive presentation with considerable appeal to collectors of French advertising, drinks memorabilia, and vintage barware.
Provenance & Period
Acquired from an estate where it was cataloged as a Bisquit Dubouché promotional one-gallon bottle with a modernist chrome tilt cradle.
The estate catalog attributed the ensemble to the first half of the 20th century. An exact manufacturing date has not been established. Its earlier ownership and original commercial location are undocumented.
Labels, Inscriptions & Branded Details
The ensemble preserves an extensive group of paper labels, molded glass lettering, and metal markings that document its French identity and American distribution. These details extend from the bottle’s shoulder to the underside of the cradle, giving the piece particular interest as a surviving example of branded cognac presentation equipment.
The main paper label identifies “Bisquit Dubouché & Co.” and names “Édouard Laporte Bisquit” as “Proprietor.” The prominent “Cognac” designation is accompanied by three stars, with “Product of France,” “1 Gallon,” and “84° Proof” recording the bottle’s origin, stated capacity, and original alcoholic strength.
The importer information provides a connection to the American market. It identifies G. H. Mumm Champagne (Société Vinicole de Champagne, Succrs.) and Associates, Inc., with the address “610 Fifth Ave., New-York, N.Y.”, under wording naming the company as sole importer for the United States. This is the distribution information printed on the bottle; Bisquit Dubouché remains the cognac brand.
At the shoulder, a decorative label features the Saint-Martial emblem, depicting a haloed figure within a shield accompanied by letters, fleurs-de-lis, and stars. Additional shoulder lettering displays the Bisquit name, contributing to the bottle’s strong visual identity above the cradle.
The rear paper label preserves further business information, including readable references to “Bottled and sold under arrangement,” “Ed. Laporte Bisquit,” “Bisquit Dubouché & Co.,” “Laporte Bisquit & Co., Succrs.”, and “Jarnac–Cognac, France.” Portions are obscured by wear, the bottle’s curvature, and the retaining collar. “Succrs.” abbreviates “successors,” reflecting the business succession recorded on the label.
Near the base, raised lettering molded directly into the glass reads “BISQUIT DUBOUCHÉ & CO” and “JARNAC–COGNAC–FRANCE.” This permanent identification complements the surviving paper labels. A small molded numeral “3” is also visible at the base; its specific manufacturing significance has not been established.
The metal components carry their own identifying details. The black retaining collar displays the Bisquit name in contrasting script, while the curved pouring attachment is stamped “BISQUIT” and “FRANCE.” The cradle also bears a “MADE IN FRANCE” marking.
Most distinctive is the ownership inscription across the base rails:
“NOT SOLD BUT REMAIN”
“PROPERTY OF BISQUIT DUBOUCHÉ & Co.”
This wording indicates that the cradle was designated as company property, supporting its interpretation as equipment supplied for commercial presentation or service. It adds a tangible connection to the cognac house’s trade practices, although no particular original establishment or loan arrangement has been documented.
Together, the proprietor’s name, American importer address, French origin markings, embossed glass, branded pourer, and company-property inscription give this ensemble an unusually rich documentary character—details that reward close inspection and distinguish it within a collection of vintage barware.
Interior Styling
A distinctive focal point for a library bar, paneled study, dining-room drinks cabinet, or hospitality-inspired interior. Its chrome framework works beautifully alongside dark mahogany, leather, cut crystal, and antique silver, bringing the collected character associated with Ralph Lauren–inspired rooms. In a more contemporary setting, the oversized bottle and geometric cradle read as a sculptural accent with an engaging history.
