This late 19th-century Chinese textile exemplifies the refined aesthetic of Peking production. The design features a serene, open field in a soft ivory hue, dramatically contrasted by rich, deep indigo blue used for the motifs and borders. This piece is a superb example of antique rugs from the Qing Dynasty's twilight years.

The central medallion showcases an intricate vase arrangement, flanked by scattered "Eight Precious Things" (Babao) symbols, including ribbons, scrolls, and stylized flora. The meticulous drawing and sparse placement of the motifs emphasize the rug's elegant negative space. The overall composition is traditional, yet the presence of specific iconography adds depth and cultural significance, often incorporating protective symbols within the design framework.

While this piece is classified within the salmon-coral-pink color rugs category due to subtle undertones or historical dye classifications, the visual impact is defined by the striking contrast between the creamy wool ground and the cobalt blue elements. The high-quality wool pile remains supple, reflecting the superior weaving standards maintained by the imperial workshops during this era.

Measuring in a versatile dimension, this piece is perfectly suited as a small scatter size rug. Its scale makes it ideal for intimate spaces, hallways, or as an accent piece to anchor a small seating area. This Peking rug offers a rare combination of historical provenance, sophisticated design, and enduring quality that transcends simple floor covering. See less
