This stunning piece is a prime example of late Republican period weaving. The robust wool pile and rich coral color saturation confirm its quality among antique rugs.

Woven to a generous room size dimension, this carpet is scaled perfectly for a formal dining room or grand salon. The field is dominated by a rich, warm coral tone, providing a vibrant backdrop for the scattered floral sprays and symbolic butterflies. The composition avoids a dense central medallion, favoring an open, airy layout typical of the era.

The palette—particularly the use of clear coral hues—is characteristic of the finest early 20th-century Chinese rugs. While exhibiting traditional motifs such as the peony and scrolling vine, the overall aesthetic leans toward the simplified, bold lines favored during the Art Deco movement.

The wide, imposing border frames the composition beautifully, containing delicate, stylized floral cartouches that contrast sharply with the expansive coral field. This specific design structure is definitive of the peking style, making this rug a highly desirable decorative artifact from the 1920s. See less
