At Turtle & Crane, we turn the past into stunning décor for today, and this artist signed folk art tiger footstool does the work of a whole room. Carved from wood and painted in orange with black, rippling stripes, it stands on four long legs with carved paws, and a tail curls down behind. Wide red-rimmed eyes and small dark ears give the head its personality, and a band of gold gilt around the neck sets it off like a collar. The stripes run across the top and down the legs in loose, confident strokes, each one following the carved form. It is artist signed on the underside.
The footstool measures 21 inches long, 6 inches deep, and 13 inches high. It is slim and low, so it fits at the foot of a chair or sofa, as a small display bench for books and objects, or as a sculptural piece for the foot of a bed, an entry, or the end of a long hall. The orange and black palette sits easily in a Palm Beach Regency or Dorothy Draper-style room with lacquered walls and bold pattern, and it brings warmth to a quieter room as the single piece with a sense of humor. It belongs with other folk art, in the spirit of Alexander Girard.
The finish is original and has aged naturally, with the soft wear that comes from decades of use. Nothing has been repainted or restored.
