This exceptional example of a late 19th-century Peking weaving captures the restrained elegance characteristic of the period. Its deep indigo field provides a dramatic canvas for the meticulously rendered symbolic motifs, making it a standout piece among all antique rugs.

The remarkable saturation of the field color defines this piece. The rich, almost midnight blue dye—a hallmark of high-quality Chinese production—is perfectly preserved, offering a sophisticated depth rarely seen in blue color rugs of this age. The sharp contrast with the pale gold wool highlights the classical Chinese iconography scattered throughout the composition.

The design eschews dense repetition in favor of an open, airy arrangement of auspicious symbols, including stylized vases holding branches of blossoms and butterflies in flight. While the overall effect is geometric due to the central medallion and structured border, the primary decorative elements classify it among the finest floral rugs produced in the Imperial style.

Framing the field is a sophisticated border system, featuring intricate key-fret patterns and detailed corner spandrels that anchor the design. The substantial dimensions of this weaving confirm its original purpose as a prestigious furnishing, ideally suited for grand interiors, placing it firmly within the category of desirable room size rugs.
