This exceptional example of early 20th-century Chinese weaving captures the restrained elegance characteristic of the Peking style. The design utilizes a strikingly saturated, near-navy field, a hallmark of the finest blue color rugs from this period, which serves as a dramatic backdrop for the delicate, scattered motifs.

The field is intentionally sparse, allowing the deep indigo hue to dominate while emphasizing the finely rendered golden-ochre floral sprays. These stylized blossoms and symbolic vases are placed with careful asymmetry, reflecting the influence of traditional Chinese painting. The subtle shading and high-quality wool construction lend the surface a luxurious, almost velvety sheen, typical of antique rugs woven for export or the imperial court.

A complex, multi-layered border frames the composition, featuring a prominent inner guard band of continuous vine work in pale gold, contrasting sharply with the darker outer frame. The overall scale and robust construction suggest this piece was intended as a grand, room size rug, designed to anchor a formal reception area or drawing room with its commanding presence and sophisticated palette.

Woven during a transitional era in Chinese history, this Peking carpet represents the peak of the late Qing and early Republic weaving traditions. Its enduring appeal lies in the perfect balance between the bold, monochromatic field and the precise, symbolic detailing, making it a timeless statement piece for the discerning collector. See less
