Of generous rectangular proportions, the cassone measures 185 cm in length and displays the warm colour, pronounced grain and naturally aged character associated with centuries-old walnut. The carved decoration lends the piece a strong architectural and sculptural presence, reflecting the tradition of elaborately decorated Italian storage chests. The hinged top opens to reveal a substantial interior storage compartment, combining decorative presence with the practical function for which cassoni were traditionally created. Its impressive scale makes it particularly suitable as a statement piece within an entrance hall, living room, bedroom or period interior. An old paper label or document remains attached to the reverse. The inscription is presently illegible and has therefore not been interpreted or attributed. The cassone displays numerous historic woodworm holes. As a precaution, the old holes have been treated with woodworm killer. There are also various historic repairs consistent with the considerable age and continued use of the piece. Presented in good antique condition considering its 18th-century date, with historic repairs, old treated woodworm holes, surface wear, patination and other signs of age and use that contribute to its character.
