The hinged upper section opens to reveal a carefully arranged and fully partitioned correspondence rack designed for organising letters, envelopes and stationery. Three small pull-out drawers provide additional storage, while the original glass inkwells remain in place. The front drops down to form an integrated writing slope, retaining its gilt-tooled leather writing surface. This ingenious arrangement transforms the compact desktop cabinet into a practical writing station while providing extensive storage for correspondence and writing implements. The brass lock is stamped “Brahma London”, reflecting the use of a respected British lock manufacturer whose mechanisms were widely associated with quality cabinetry, boxes and secure furniture. Particularly appealing is the survival of the original internal components, giving the piece considerable authenticity and allowing its original Victorian function to be readily appreciated. A small collection of personal correspondence from a previous owner has also remained with the box, adding an interesting element of social history. Presented in very good antique condition with appropriate signs of age and historic use.
