The coffer is constructed in the traditional pegged manner, with a panelled front, fielded panel sides and a substantial planked top. The oak is particularly robust, measuring approximately 1.75 inches thick in places, reflecting the exceptionally solid construction associated with furniture of this period. The chest stands on large integral stile feet measuring approximately 9.5 inches in width, giving the piece a strong architectural presence. Internally, it retains its original candle box, an important and practical feature commonly found in early coffers. Of particular note are the surviving original iron hinges and original lock, together with a key. These period fittings complement the wonderfully aged oak, which has developed a rich medium-to-dark colour and an attractive natural patina through nearly four centuries of use. Presented in good antique condition with the expected surface character, wear and age-related marks consistent with its circa 1630–1640 origin. An imposing example of early German oak furniture, combining substantial proportions, original period features and beautifully matured timber.
