The inkwell is formed from thick crystal glass, giving the piece considerable visual weight and stability. Its generously proportioned body is complemented by the original cut-glass lid, creating an attractive combination of practical Victorian design and decorative craftsmanship. Dumpy inkwells were designed with broad, heavy bases to provide stability on a writing desk and reduce the likelihood of accidental tipping while using a dip pen. Their distinctive low-set proportions and substantial glass construction have subsequently made them desirable examples of Victorian desk accessories. This particularly large example remains in original condition and displays relatively little evidence of use. Beyond its original function as an inkwell, its substantial crystal construction also makes it an attractive decorative desk object or paperweight. Presented in very good antique condition with minor signs of age and use consistent with its period.
