The piece has a deep black lacquered ground embellished with delicate gilded figural scenes. The decoration depicts figures seated upon a bench together with a couple within a stylised garden or park setting, creating the exoticised East Asian-inspired imagery characteristic of Western Chinoiserie decoration. Designed as both a match holder and striker, the underside incorporates a textured striking surface intended for use with period non-safety matches. A small aperture to the upper section allows the piece to be mounted conveniently on a wall. Chinoiserie became an important element of European decorative arts, drawing inspiration from Chinese and East Asian artistic traditions. The style enjoyed several periods of renewed popularity, including during the Victorian era, when lacquered and papier-mâché objects became fashionable decorative accessories. Presented in good antique condition with age-related wear and some damage to the upper section. The striker shows signs of historic use, consistent with its original function and age. An appealing and unusual example of Victorian Chinoiserie, particularly suitable for a collection of antique smoking accessories, lacquerware or decorative curiosities.
