The fall-front opens to create a practical writing surface at a comfortable desk height of 74.5 cm. Behind is a thoughtfully fitted interior incorporating multiple compartments and pigeonholes, providing organised storage for correspondence, stationery, documents and writing accessories. The bureau also retains its key, an attractive and practical feature that contributes to the authentic period character of the piece. Below the writing section are three generously proportioned drawers, providing substantial concealed storage. Each retains its original brass swan-neck handles, which provide an elegant period detail and contrast beautifully against the warm mahogany. The upper section is enhanced with attractive crossbanding, subtly defining the architectural lines of the bureau and demonstrating the quality of craftsmanship invested in its construction. Particularly striking are the cabriole legs, which terminate in traditional ball-and-claw feet. Their sculptural form gives the bureau a graceful and beautifully balanced silhouette while introducing a strong Georgian and Chippendale-inspired influence to the Edwardian design. The mahogany itself displays pronounced natural grain and attractive figuring throughout. Deep, warm colour and an appealing aged patina give the timber considerable richness, depth and character. Very well constructed and presented in very good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and use consistent with its early 20th-century Edwardian origin. At only 81 cm wide and 47 cm deep, this is a particularly versatile bureau, combining a dedicated writing surface, fitted interior and three substantial drawers within a relatively compact footprint. Its decorative ball-and-claw feet and richly coloured mahogany also give it considerably greater visual presence than its modest dimensions might suggest. Ideally suited to a study, library, bedroom, drawing room or sophisticated period interior. Dimensions: Height: 102.5 cm Width: 81 cm Depth: 47 cm Desk Height: 74.5 cm See less
