Constructed in mahogany, the table features a rectangular fold-over top with a moulded edge. When opened, the surface approximately doubles in depth, providing a generous tabletop originally intended for taking tea, playing cards and other social occasions. The frieze is enhanced with delicate crossbanding and inlaid detailing, providing subtle decorative contrast while maintaining the understated character associated with georgian cabinetmaking. The table is raised on four elegantly proportioned ring-turned legs, tapering towards traditional peg feet. The combination of fine turning, restrained inlay and warm mahogany gives the piece a particularly attractive architectural quality. When closed, its relatively shallow proportions allow the table to function equally well as a console or side table, while the folding top retains its original practical versatility. The mahogany has developed a warm and attractive patina through more than two centuries of age and use, complementing the surviving period character of the piece.
