The finely constructed mahogany hull is complemented by an assortment of nautical brass details, including a pair of oars ingeniously incorporated into the stand together with a handmade anchor and decorative ropework. Originally conceived as a table cruet, the boat would have accommodated glass or crystal condiment vessels for salt, pepper and mustard. These original containers are now absent, leaving the beautifully crafted mahogany and brass structure as a decorative object in its own right. Novelty cruets became particularly fashionable during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, combining practical tableware with playful and often highly imaginative forms. Nautical subjects were especially well suited to this tradition, producing distinctive conversation pieces for the dining table. Today, the boat could be displayed as an unusual maritime centrepiece or repurposed as an elegant receptacle for jewellery, cufflinks and other small objects. Presented in very good antique condition with appropriate signs of age and use, retaining an attractive patina throughout.
