A stellar find for collectors of fine Turn-of-the-Century European ceramics, this antique polychrome terracotta sculpture is a verified original work by the celebrated Austrian manufacturer Bernard Bloch, dating to circa 1900.
Masterfully modeled with incredible narrative depth, the piece captures a slice-of-life realism scene: a finely dressed Edwardian gentleman in a top hat, long overcoat, and waistcoat having his boots polished by a focused shoeshine boy kneeled over his wooden footrest. The expression, textural folds in the clothing, and supplementary tools arranged on the cobblestone-styled base demonstrate the high-tier craftsmanship Bloch's Bohemian workshop was famous for.
The hollow underside bears the essential authentication markers: the impressed "BB" factory cartouche, pattern mold number 4415, and the German legal stamp "Vervielfältigung vorbehalten" (Reproduction Reserved). This is an exceptionally charming, authentic piece of European social history and continental art pottery that presents beautifully on any library mantle, study desk, or antique showcase.

There are scattered paint flakes and surface abrasions on the back of the gentleman’s coat, along with minor scuffs and tiny chips around the perimeter of the base edges. The structural integrity is excellent, with no cracks, breaks, or structural restorations. Hand-painted colors retain excellent overall tone. less
