This exceptional example of the art Deco style captures the bold aesthetic shift occurring in Shanghai and Peking weaving centers during the early 20th century. The design moves away from dense, traditional patterns toward a more modern, open composition that emphasizes negative space and dramatic asymmetry.

The composition is defined by its striking visual contrast: a deep, saturated red field is framed by an unusually wide, luminous border. Across this rich backdrop, highly stylized, vibrant floral motifs and traditional Chinese symbols drift, showcasing the characteristic use of open space and the soft, lustrous quality of the wool pile.

The skilled weavers from the region of origin, known for their distinctive Chinese rugs, have expertly rendered elegant vases and trailing branches that spill over the guard borders. While the exact dimensions are specific to this piece, the overall scale suggests it was intended as a commanding room size centerpiece, designed to anchor a sophisticated interior space of the era.

This rug exemplifies the height of the Art Deco movement in Asia, where traditional Chinese iconography was reinterpreted through a modern lens of simplified form and bold red color blocking. The plush, high-quality wool and striking red palette ensure this piece remains a highly desirable and significant addition to any collection of exceptional antique rugs. See less
