This exceptional piece exemplifies the refined aesthetic of early 20th-century Chinese weaving. Its deep, saturated field of navy blue creates a striking contrast against the pale gold and cream border, making it a compelling example among blue color rugs.

The narrow, elongated format confirms its intended use as a refined hallway runner rug, perfectly suited to define and enhance transitional spaces. The quality and age of this textile place it firmly within the category of desirable antique rugs. The central field is deliberately minimalist, allowing the eye to focus on the complex, stylized borders.

Within the broad, light-toned guard border, the design employs traditional Chinese elements, including scrolling vines and stylized chrysanthemums, which categorize it among elegant floral rugs. These motifs are rendered in shades of lighter blue and dark gold, providing textural depth and visual interest against the geometric Greek key meander framing the design.

The meticulous knotting and high-quality wool speak to the superior craftsmanship characteristic of the Peking region during this period. Interspersed among the cloud bands are auspicious symbols, often interpreted as protective symbols intended to bring good fortune to the household. This runner is a rare and sophisticated testament to the enduring artistry of Chinese textile production. See less
