Presenting a rare, verified pre-war first-edition masterpiece by the legendary shin-hanga artist Kawase Hasui (Japanese, 1883–1957).
Titled "Zaimoku Island, Matsushima" (Matsushima Zaimokujima), this exquisite relief woodblock print measures 15 by 10 inches and was designed and hand-pulled in May 1933 as part of his celebrated series, "Collection of Scenic Views of Japan, Eastern Japan Edition". The serene, luminous composition captures a traditional Japanese sailboat drifting past the iconic, naturally arched rock formations of Matsushima Bay.
This particular impression is an exceptional collector’s find, retaining its full outer margins which proudly display the definitive pre-war Watanabe "C" copyright seal (strictly utilized between 1929 and 1942) along the top edge, and the original May 1933 date stamp (Shōwa hachi-nen go-gatsu saku) in the lower-left margin. The artistry showcases Hasui’s unparalleled mastery of bokashi (hand-rubbed color graduation), casting a tranquil glow across the shifting water and sky.
The print comes safely housed in its original vintage gold-toned wood frame measuring 18.5" x 14" x 0.75" with professional matting, ready to hang and display immediately.
Provenance & Inscriptions:
The reverse side of the handmade washi paper exhibits the deep, rich pigment bleed-through characteristic of an authentic, hand-pulled woodblock print.
The lower reverse margin preserves a unified, matching period hand in pencil written presumably by the framer during the original assembly.
These notes detail the artist ("Hasui"), location ("Matsushima"), inventory layout numbers (#8683 and 1373), the exact outer mat board perimeter dimensions (13 1/4 x 17 5/8), and a legacy "Wilson Sports" corporate inventory/routing reference tag.

The print and mat are structurally unaltered, remaining exactly as originally assembled. The handmade washi paper displays a uniform, natural warm patina consistent with its nearly century-old antique history, with a single isolated brown spot on the reverse upper margin area. To allow for definitive verification of the pre-war stamps and reverse inscriptions, the original 1933 brown paper dust backing has been carefully peeled back on three sides and is currently secured with low-tack, easily reversible tape; the print itself remains completely untouched and undisturbed.
