Original mixed-media work by noted Peruvian-American and San Diego artist Guillermo “Gmo.” Acevedo (1920–1988), depicting an Apache woman of the American Southwest in profile, wearing traditional dress and elaborate jewelry.
The artist’s son, artist Mario Torero, personally confirmed the attribution and provided the following history: the work was created in San Francisco around 1978 and combines a painted acrylic background with an original silkscreen layer on paper. It is hand signed “Gmo. Acevedo” and personally dedicated in graphite to a collector identified as “Señora Janet.”
Acevedo was an influential Southern California artist and master draftsman known for his sensitive portrayals of Indigenous people, urban life and historic architecture. He was also active in San Diego’s Latino arts and preservation communities.
The artwork measures approximately 18 inches high by 24 inches wide and is offered unframed. It was removed from its former frame so the entire sheet and condition could be examined. The visible condition issue is scattered age-related foxing and spotting across the front surface, as shown clearly in the photographs. No additional concealed damage was discovered upon removal. The reverse is generally clean, with minor evidence of its former mounting. The work has not been professionally cleaned or restored and is offered in its present vintage condition.
Acquired from the estate of a private San Diego collector through Cal Auctions in September 2026. The artist identification, subject, medium, approximate date and San Francisco origin were confirmed through direct correspondence with Mario Torero. A copy of this correspondence will accompany the artwork.
A compelling and well-documented example of Acevedo’s late-1970s work, combining original painting, silkscreen and personal presentation history.

The artwork has widespread age-related foxing and brown spotting across the front of the sheet, including portions of the image and surrounding margins. After removal from its original frame, no additional hidden damage was found; the reverse appears substantially cleaner than the front. The slick paper remains intact, with no significant tears, punctures, or major creases observed. The acrylic background, silkscreened image, hand-applied signature, and pencil dedication remain legible. The work has not been professionally cleaned, treated, or restored and is offered in its present condition. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition report. less
