What you see in the center is a polished pontil mark. When a glassblower creates a hand-blown piece, they use an iron rod called a pontil (or "punty") to hold the bottom of the object. When the sculpture is finished, the rod is snapped off, leaving a rough, jagged scar on the glass. For high-quality art glass like this giraffe, artisans use a grinding wheel to smooth out and polish away that rough spot, resulting in that slightly recessed, matte, oval-shaped dimple. It is a signature characteristic of authentic, hand-blown vintage glass rather than a maker's mark or signature. less
