The maker of this rhinoceros figurine had to ground down and highly polish the entire flat underside of the rhino's feet to completely flatten the base so it stands perfectly stable without wobbling. Because the glassblower sheared or snapped the pontil rod off the very bottom, grinding the entire footprint flat was the most elegant way to remove the sharp, jagged glass scar. This smooth, glassy, and completely flat surface across the bottom surface is another classic hallmark of high-quality, hand-blown vintage studio art glass. less
