An attractive 18th-century American Queen Anne maple highboy, attributed to New England, circa 1750–1780, featuring a beautifully carved radiating fan, graceful cabriole legs, and traditional early American cabinetmaking.
Standing approximately 73 inches tall, this two-part high chest features five graduated drawers in the upper case beneath a restrained molded cornice. The lower case incorporates two full-width drawers, the bottom ingeniously designed to simulate three separate drawers with a deeply carved central fan. The fan displays narrow radiating flutes, individually scalloped terminals, and a concentric semicircular center. A shaped apron and four cabriole legs terminating in rounded pad feet complete the elegant Queen Anne silhouette.
Constructed primarily of solid maple with pine secondary woods, the highboy exhibits traditional hand-cut dovetail joinery, solid wooden drawer bottoms, wide-board case construction, and aged interior and back surfaces. The upper and lower sections separate for easier transportation.
The piece has undergone historical refinishing, resulting in its warm honey-amber color, and retains the character of centuries-old furniture. The brass hardware is replaced, and evidence of previous structural restoration is present, including replacement support cleats between the two cases.
An appealing example of early American furniture, combining elegant proportions, substantial craftsmanship, attractive hand-carved decoration, and practical storage.
