The composition is built on a subdued blend of grays and whites, punctuated by warm ochre and soft peach tones that pick out the subject's hair and facial features. Broad, confident brushstrokes create a richly textured surface with a sense of depth and immediacy, while the fragmented handling of form lends the image an air of mystery. Despite its small size, the work carries remarkable visual weight and rewards close, repeated viewing. The subject's somber expression invites quiet contemplation, reflecting the exploration of identity and emotion characteristic of mid-20th-century expressionist painting. The canvas is mounted on a sturdy wooden frame with a simple, unadorned edge profile, allowing the artwork to command attention on its own terms. Its intimate scale makes it ideal for a gallery wall, a bookshelf vignette, a small wall in a powder room or hallway, or propped on an easel atop a desk or console. It pairs beautifully with both modern and traditional furnishings and adds an artful, collected layer to any room.

The piece measures 10 inches wide, 1.5 inches deep and 10 inches high. It is in very good vintage condition, with a well-preserved oil paint surface and minor age-appropriate patina. There are no visible signs of damage, repairs or significant wear, and the overall appearance is consistent with careful handling and display, and the piece is ready to hang. A thought-provoking addition for collectors of mid-century abstract and figurative art. See less
