A panoramic color lithograph by Mayeu Passa (1921–1991), the self-taught French artist from Provence whose career was sparked by an early encounter with Henri Matisse. After decades of obscurity, a New York Times write-up brought him late-life recognition with exhibitions in New York, Tokyo, and Paris.
"Les Mauresques" is a sweeping horizontal composition of Passa's whimsical totem-like figures rendered in a cool turquoise and blue palette with accents of magenta, red, and ochre — a dreamlike procession that fills the nearly three-foot-wide sheet. Hand-signed in pencil lower right and numbered 35/85 lower left, printed on Japon paper.
